A plain-language guide to Vedic astrologyand how Naksha reads the sky you were born under.
What is Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology — Jyotish, the "science of light" — is the system of astrology that originated in ancient India thousands of years ago. It maps the exact positions of the Sun, Moon and planets at the moment you were born, and reads them as a portrait of your temperament, your timing, and the chapters your life moves through.
It isn't the one-paragraph horoscope you scroll past in a newspaper. It's a full, personal chart — built from your exact date, time and place of birth — that no two people share in quite the same way.
How it differs from Western astrology
Two big things set Jyotish apart from the Western (Sun-sign) astrology most people know:
It leads with your Moon, not your Sun. Western astrology centers the Sun sign — the one in the back of magazines. Vedic astrology centers your Moon sign (your Rashi) — the mind, the emotions, your inner weather. It's often a far more accurate mirror of how you actually feel and react.
It tracks the real, current sky. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the actual constellations. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons ~2,000 years ago. Because Earth slowly wobbles on its axis, the two have drifted about 24° apart — which is why your Vedic sign is often one sign back from the one you grew up calling yours.
What's inside your chart
Your birth chart (your kundli) is a snapshot of the sky at your birth. A few of the pieces Naksha reads for you:
Lagna (Ascendant)
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — your outward self, your body, how you meet the world.
Rashi (Moon sign)
Where the Moon sat at your birth — your mind and emotions. The heart of a Vedic reading.
Nakshatras (27 lunar mansions)
The Moon's path split into 27 finer segments. Your birth nakshatra adds a deep layer of personality the sign alone misses.
Dashas (planetary periods)
Vedic astrology's timing engine — long chapters ruled by different planets that shape what a stretch of life is about.
Houses (the 12 bhavas)
Twelve areas of life — self, wealth, communication, home, love, work, relationships, and more — and which planets light them up.
Sade Sati (Saturn's transit)
Saturn's ~7.5-year passage around your natal Moon. Not a curse — a test that strips what's flimsy and builds what's real.
How Naksha works
Naksha does the hard astronomy and the reading for you — in about 30 seconds, free.
- 1Enter your birth details. Date, exact time, and place of birth. The more exact the time, the sharper your chart — especially your Lagna.
- 2Get your chart. Naksha computes your full kundli — Lagna, Moon sign, nakshatra, planetary positions and your current dasha — and turns it into a clear, personal read of who you are.
- 3Ask Ved anything. Ved is your astrologer in the app. Career, relationships, timing, a rough patch — ask in plain language and get answers grounded in your chart, not a generic forecast.
- 4Connect with your people. Share your username, add the people in your life, and see how your charts actually relate — temperament, communication, the way you two move under pressure.
