Vedic astrology guides
Plain-language answers to the questions people ask most about Vedic astrology (Jyotish): what a birth chart (kundli) means, how kundli matching and the 36-point guna milan score work, what your birth nakshatra says about you, and how the Vimshottari dasha system times the chapters of your life. Written by the team behind Naksha, a free Vedic astrology app.
What does my birth chart (kundli) mean?
A birth chart (kundli) is a map of where the Sun, Moon, planets and the rising sign were at your exact time and place of birth. Read it in three layers: your lagna (ascendant), your Moon sign and nakshatra, then the houses and the planets in them.
Kundli matching and guna milan, explained
Guna milan (Ashtakoota) compares two Moon placements across eight factors worth 36 points in total. 18 is the traditional minimum, 24+ is considered good, and Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most weight, but the score is a starting point, not a verdict.
The 27 nakshatras: what your birth star means
Nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, each 13°20' of the sidereal zodiac. Your birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) is the one the Moon occupied when you were born; it shapes temperament, starts your dasha sequence and is used in matching.
Vimshottari dasha: how Vedic astrology times your life
Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods. Your starting period comes from the ruler of your birth nakshatra, and the time left in it depends on how far the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra. Each mahadasha splits into antardashas and pratyantardashas.
Sade sati: phases and dates for every Moon sign
Sade sati is the roughly 7½-year period when Saturn transits the sign before your Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the sign after it, in three 2½-year phases. With Saturn in sidereal Pisces since 29 March 2025, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries Moon signs are in sade sati now; Taurus starts on 3 June 2027.
Mangal dosha: what being manglik actually means
Mangal dosha is present when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, so about half of all charts show it from the lagna. It only matters in matching, is balanced when both partners have it, and is often cancelled by Mars's sign or Jupiter's aspect.
Kaal sarp dosha: the 12 types and how much it matters
Kaal sarp dosha is a pattern where all seven planets sit on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, with 12 named types by Rahu's house. It is a modern idea, not found by name in the classical texts, and is read through the houses and dashas of Rahu and Ketu.
